Today’s Karate tournaments may include a Kumite competition and/or Kata competition.

The Kumite competition may be further classified into both team events and individual events.

Point values ranging from one to three are awarded for successfully performing a range of techniques. Attacks are limited to the head, face, neck, abdomen, chest, back and side of the body.

The winner of a match is the athlete with a clear lead of 8 or more points, or the athlete with the greatest number of points when time is up.

Katas are the vehicle through which the combative techniques and traditional principles of a particular master or style of Karate are transmitted from generation to generation.

The Kata must be realistic in terms of fighting - while displaying power, concentration, technique, and potential impact, as well as rhythm and balance.

The evolution of karate began over 1500 years ago, when Bodhidharma migrated to China from India, and began teaching Zen Buddhism to the Shaolin priests. He also introduced them to a rigorous set of exercises designed to strengthen the mind and body; exercises which are thought to be the basis of modern day Karate.
