In 1887, American Thomas Baldwin designed the first collapsible silk parachute, but didn’t attempt to use if for almost ten years. Almost 30 years later another American, made the first international free-fall jump using a hand operated parachute. This unique hand operated parachute revolutionized parachuting and gave birth to a new sport. The first Sport Parachuting World Championships were held in Yugoslavia in 1951.
